Ismail needs a job now

By TEH ENG HOCK

TAIPING: Now that the Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election is over, Ismail Saffian will turn his attention back to his family and friends.

He will also need to find a new job.

Ismail, the Barisan Nasional candidate who lost to PAS’ Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin on Tuesday, admitted that the campaign had taken a toll on his home life.

He accused Pakatan Rakyat of smearing his good name during the campaign by circulating compromising photographs, supposedly of him, and alleged that he had written a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to apologise for his corrupt practices.

Lamenting that this had affected his reputation among friends and relatives, and strained the relationship with his wife and five children, Ismail said: “Now, I have to explain (the truth) to my friends, my wife and children.

“How could they launch these personal attacks against me, without proof?”

He urged Pakatan to come clean now and admit that the allegations were baseless.

The retired human resource manager also said he would need to get a new job now.

“I still have a family to support,” he said in an interview yesterday.

He said a driving factor behind Barisan’s loss in the polls was the recent takeover of the Perak government which had irked many voters, who threw their support behind Pakatan.

Ismail said he readily accepted the result as it was what the people wanted.
